Rachel Sue (Merkovitz) Wood, 71, of Warrenville, IL. Passed away suddenly on June 4th, 2024. She was a beloved member of the community, and an extremely kind and caring friend to all. In fact, her greatest joy in life came from helping others. Rachel was a very passionate and selfless person deeply devoted to her family, friends and the Jewish community. The impact she had on countless students, through all of her work, is truly remarkable. Rachel’s pride and joy was her 7 grandchildren, her legacy will live on through them.
A Memorial service will be held at Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard, IL on Friday, June 7th at 1:00 pm. Shiva will follow at the synagogue from 2pm-5 pm.
Rachel was born in Pontiac, Michigan to Ralph and Elaine Merkovitz on August 7th, 1952. She went to Pontiac Central High School graduating in 1970. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan and a Masters in Speech Pathology from Indiana University.
Rachel has always had a passion for working with diverse learners. She started her career as a Speech Pathologist in the school system. She continued her career in private practice followed by work in the Early Intervention program. In retirement, she has continued to use her gift as an educator focusing on inclusion in Jewish education.
Rachel is survived by her husband David Wood, her siblings Karen (Jerry) Adams & Mark(Wendy) Merkovitz, her daughters Laurel ( Bhaven) Shah, Stacey ( Matt) Heimann, & Anna ( Ray) Jess, and her grandchildren Mira, Aryana, Sasha, Chloe, Lilly, Archer, & Micah.
